8 - Tribal braii, weekend in Beau Vallon and coral exam

October 18, 2011
Another week just flew by here in Cap Ternay. I cannot believe we have been here for two weeks already, and I know time is just going to fly by from now on.
This weekend was another great one. First of all our traditional braii and themed party was on Friday, but once again the wood was wet and we were not able to do a barbecue. Fridays are always a big deal for us since it is MEAT DAY. This Friday the theme was tribal, so most of us ended up creating skirts out of leaves found around base and painting our body with eye liner. It was again a great night of bonding and dancing on the tables of our kitchen. The guys brought in big sticks like you see in the photos, and I and Alisdair quickly turned it into a limbo game! Our own 58  year old French-Canadian Ginette even played the game and participated!

We had rented apartments in Beau Vallon for the whole weekend, so much of us got to enjoy a hot shower and do real laundry. However, it rained the whole day so we didn’t go really far. We just went to the Internet cafĂ©, bought food and hung out inside the whole day, which was actually pretty sweet. In the evening, we all met up and went to LaFaya and Tequila Boom again, and there were a lot more people than last time. A local singer even sang for a little bit. We met with our Seselwa friends that we met last weekend – one of them is actually half French! – and we all had a good time. In the early hours of Sunday, everyone still awake headed to Beau Vallon beach to watch the sunrise.
We spent all day Sunday at the beach in Port Launay. The sun was finally out, and it now looks like it should be around for quite a while! ENOUGH MONSOON! We are all getting darker by the minute, and the mood changes completely.
On Monday, we were all back to work. We had our first coral exam at 800am, which was a little rough right after the weekend. The passing score is 95%, and only 8 of us passed (out of 33). I passed with a 98%, second best score! However before starting surveying underwater, we have to pass two tests, so we are all back for a second round on Wednesday.
