10 - 80s night and Claire's birthday

October 23, 2011

How is it the 23rd of October already?! Another week just flew by, and it is strange to think that the volunteers staying for only 5 weeks are going to be done soon, and we will have fresh blood coming in. Indeed, the Seselwa government will not re-open the water area around Praslin and Curieuse, so it looks like we will still have 40 people on base until December.

Anyways, this Friday was 80s night. All of us put our best clothes on and did crazy hair and make-up – I just did a synchronized swimming makeup. It was fun, but again, no real braii outside. Damn rain! I went to bed quite early since I was still getting out of my cold, but I was a little disappointed. All the staff just went back to their office to play darts, and half of the volunteers went to bed. The costumes were fun but I wish there had been more dancing! Phil, one of the older volunteers – he is in his 60s – really enjoyed the night, danced on the tables and learned “Thriller”‘s choreography.

On Saturday was the usual bus-food-shopping-internet trip to Victoria. I came back to base early afternoon to take a nap and chill for a while. Me, Nina, Claire and Sarah left base again at 16h30 to catch the bus, but we ended up being driven all the way to Beau Vallon by the director of the Kreol Festival (which is happening the whole week on Mahé). It saved us some precious time and money, and we had time to stroll along the beach in Beau Vallon and witness a gorgeous sunset!

It was Claire’s birthday on Sunday so the usual crew celebrated on Saturday evening. The baby of the trip turned 19. Same old, we went to Lafaya and Tequila Boom, and ended up on the beach. It is really great to know everyone who works in these places, as they can watch over us and get us drinks faster than anyone else. The Spanish Marines and lots of Russian businessmen were in town that night, and they were all crazy. I think we were probably the only girls in the bar at first, and I almost felt uncomfortable being surrounded by so many men. I was very glad we had our own guys with us, and we know they are all sweet; they take care of us and watch over us (when they are not too busy posing with their cocktails and teasing us!).

I ended up going back to base early Sunday morning as we have homework due on Monday, but some people stayed in town a little longer. I have a skin infection on my face and I really have to be careful about having it always clean, and put antibiotic cream on it. It already looks better, but I cannot wait to have it all gone. Hopefully we will not have any boat problems this week and everything can go smoothly. Next Saturday is “Creole Day” at the President’s Village Orphanage, and all of us are going to go and play with the kids for a couple of hours. We have the whole week to prepare our little activities, but some include face painting, bracelet making, rugby, dance party, snorkel experience and more…
