The first weekend in Cap Ternay just ended, and what a weekend ! Friday night was our braii + party night at the base, and like I mentioned previously, me and James were in charge of it.
It had rained all day so the wood was wet and we could not make the braii (barbecue) started… Unfortunately we had to cook the meat inside. However, the theme was still there! It was a great toga night. My toga was bright pink and a little short so I ended up losing it half of the night but we had a great time! Some of the staff was there too and it was great to be able to loosen up and talk to them for a bit outside of the diving realm! Here are some photos of me and my guys, as well as some other shots of the night:
1 – from left to right: Ben, Tom, Diederik, me, Mark, Nina, James
2 – Mark and Alisdair
3 & 4 – guys and girls
5 – Grace’s mentor group: James, Grace, Jess and me.
On that first photo, all of us except Diederik are staying for 5 months. There are 11 of us staying until March, and luckily, it’s for the big majority the people I get along with best and that you will see in most of the photos: Mark, Ben, Tom, James, Nina, Sara, Sarah, Emily, Ross, Nicole and me.
On Saturday morning we all tried to sleep in but for us, sleeping in means 800am. Most of us took the 920am bus to go into Victoria to access the Internet and just chill out in town for a bit. We all enjoyed a meal full of meat and cheese, as well as Coke and some chocolate milkshake. We ended up waiting almost 2 hours to catch the bus back. The buses here are like old Indian buses that are not really big and just struggle to go up a hill. And since we are on the other side of the world for most Seselwa people, it makes our trip super long. We had to walk to the base under pouring rain, and it’s a 40 minute walk from the bus stop.
Saturday night, some of us went out to Beau Vallon – which is where I will be working during the second part of this internship. Of course it was again the same people going out, but we had the time of our life. Like I said previously, my motto for this trip is to live in the moment, take all the emotions in and enjoy every opportunity I get to have fun and have new experiences. We named ourselves the “GVI party” team: Mark, Diederik, Ben, Tom, James, Sara, Nina, Tiffany, Sarah, Jess, Claire and me.
It was a 45 minute ride from our base to there… Technically it’s really close but there are no direct roads so we have to go through Victoria…. Anyways, it was A BLAST. We started up in a bar called Lafaya, and met up with two of the staff members there. The Navy Seals were in town so we also got to meet some new faces and have fun with guys who live in a submarine most of the year. We then went to Tequila Boom, a club that is right next door, and danced the night away.
We went back to the base in the early hours of morning. After a short sleep, a bunch of us went snorkeling right in the Bay of Ternay. All the guys who didn’t go out were already out and about around the island. The water felt really nice and the sun finally came out. We got the chance to see a nurse shark, some turtles and a massive stingray. The rest of the day was spent laying around in the hammocks or taking a nap. We have a farmer living 5 minutes away from us and sometimes his cows escape. Yesterday two of his cows came running towards us as we were all sitting in the hammock. Try picturing the scene with 5 people trying to get out of the hammock as fast as possible. We all ended up on the ground with a good laugh. A great weekend in the Seychelles!
We also had a red rain this week, which was really impressive yet beautiful. It was pouring rain and everything was red.
