18 – Toujours pas de plongée; weekend de 3 jours

Les plongées ont encore une fois été annulées aujourd’hui à cause des mauvaises conditions, et apparemment ça ne va pas s’arranger jusqu'à Dimanche. Du coup, notre programme a change, et le staff nous a donné un weekend de 3 jours.  Ce soir nous aurons notre barbecue Thanksgiving au lieu de Vendredi soir, mais je suis assez contente ! Je vais aider beaucoup avec le repas car on me considère comme une Américaine ici (les gens oublient que je suis française a cause de mon accent Américain), et j’ai hate d’apprendre à tout cuisiner comme il se doit ! Il est à peine 8h00 du matin et on m’a déjà demandé de faire du pain pour ce soir, car j’ai la « touche française » avec le pain.

Hier le staff nous a proposé plusieurs activités, et mon groupe est parti en randonnée jusqu’à des chutes d’eau près de Port Launay. On a pu se baigner, sauter des rochers et profiter de l’eau douce pour une fois ! L’endroit était vraiment magique et on s’est tous bien amusés pour l’après-midi.

Aujourd’hui je vais surement rester au camp, regarder quelques films et aider avec la cuisine et la pâtisserie du repas de Thanksgiving. Je n’ai pas de plans précis pour ce weekend car je ne pensais pas avoir 3 jours de libre. J’ai vraiment envie d’aller me balader au sud-ouest de l’ile demain pour découvrir ces plages sauvages dont tout le monde parle, comme Anse Intendance ou Anse Takamaka. Samedi et dimanche je suis dans un apartment à Beau Vallon avec les amis pour juste trainer sur la plage, voir les amis locaux, sortir un peu et puis juste pour changer d’air et sortir de la base pour le weekend.

18 – Still no diving, 3-day weekend

Dives have been canceled again today because of the rough sea, and apparently it will just get worse until Sunday. Our schedule has been changed quite a bit, and we were given a 3-day weekend. Today will be our Thanksgiving barbecue instead of Friday, which I’m really excited about! I get to help out with the meal since I’m considered American on camp, and I’m pumped to learn to cook a Thanksgiving meal. I guess I need to learn if I want to live in the US! It’s only 800am and I have already been asked to make bread for dinner because I have the “french-touch” with the bread.

Yesterday a group of us hiked to waterfalls next to Port Launay, and we got to jump off rocks and enjoy being in freshwater for a change. The place was really beautiful and we all had an amazing time. It kept us busy most of the afternoon.

Today I will probably stay on base, watch some DVDs and help out with the cooking and the baking of the Thanksgiving meal. I do not have any definite plans for the weekend since I was not expecting to have 3 days off. I really want to go southwest of the island tomorrow with some of the girls and look at some of the beautiful, wild beaches everyone has been talking about, such as Anse Intendance or Anse Takamaka. On Saturday and Sunday I am staying in an apartment with the other guys in Beau Vallon to just relax on the beach, hang out with my friends, go out to Lafaya and simply get out of the base for the weekend.  I will keep you updated ;)

17 – Weekend relax, randonnée à Cap Matoopa, et mer agitée

Le theme du barbecue de Vendredi dernier  était Superhéros, mais je dois admettre que je ne me suis pas déguisée pour la premiere fois. J’avais pas mal d’idées mais je manquais de temps et de matériel pour tout créer donc j’ai juste porté des vetements normaux. J’ai passé beaucoup de temps en cuisine à preparer du pain (et oui j’ai appris à faire du pain et des brioches de mes propres mains ici !) et je n’avais plus vraiment l’énergie de me déguiser après tout ça.

J’était assez fatiguée de la semaine précédente donc je suis restée au camp samedi soir. J’ai passé la journée à Victoria à trainer dans les rues, faire les magasins, manger quelques tranches de pizza et je suis revenue au camp en fin d’après-midi. Il y avait plusieurs d’entre nous ce soir là, et je dois admettre que j’ai passé une agréable soirée. On a tous cuisine ensemble un bon repas sans être presses par le temps, on a papoté, regardé un film et regardé les étoiles pendant quelques heures. J’ai finalement eu la chance de faire plus ample connaissance avec les nouveaux.

Dimanche quelques un d’entre nous sommes partis pour une randonnée à cap Matoopa, qui est une montagne juste derrière notre base. Le chemin est assez raide, surtout au début, et personne n’empreinte le chemin donc nous avons du y aller avec la machette pour couper les branches, mais ça vaut vraiment le coup. A la fin, c’est quasiment de l’escalade à mains nues sur un énorme bloc de granite, mais la vue est magnifique. On peut voir notre baie, la base, et toute la cote autour. Les photos ne rendent pas justice à la vue!

L’océan est vraiment agité depuis plusieurs jours, au point où nous ne pouvons plus sortir en mer. Les plongées ont été annulées hier et aujourd’hui. Il pleut beaucoup également, mais on peut dire qu’on est habitués maintenant. On espère tous que la mer va se calmer pour qu’on puisse replonger à nouveau dans les jours à venir. Le staff se démène pour nous trouver des activités des randonnées, ou des ateliers bricolage, mais avec la pluie on est surs de rien.

Cette semaine on fete Thankgsiving, et tous les Americains (et moi ; on me considère comme une Américaine) travaillent dur pour re-créer les recettes avec les ingrédients disponibles (pas de citrouilles et les dindes sont trop petites). Un autre groupe fabrique des grosses « chaussettes » (stockings) de Noel pour les enfants de l’orphelinat, donc on est tous quand meme bien occupés malgré la pluie et le manque de plongée.

17 – Quiet weekend, hike at Cap Matoopa, rough sea

Last week’s barbecue theme was Superheros, but I have to admit I did not dress up. I had a lot of ideas but very little time and material to make something so I ended up wearing normal clothes. It was the first time some of the newbies could dress up, and it seemed like most of them had a good time. I spent a lot of time baking bread (yes I learned how to make bread!) and I really did not have the energy after this to dress up.

On Saturday evening I stayed at base because I really felt exhausted. I spent the whole day in Victoria strolling in the streets, shopping and eating, and came back to base late afternoon. A couple of us were there as well and I have to admit I had a lovely evening. We all cooked a big dinner together without the rush of having to be on time, chatted, watched a movie and looked at the stars for a couple of hours. I finally got to talk more “in depth” to some of the newbies and now I can say they are pretty awesome.

On Sunday a bunch of us went for a hike on cap Matoopa, which is located right next to our base. The trail is quite steep and no one ever takes it so we have to go with a machete to get through the branches and the palm trees, but it’s all worth it. We basically have to climb a huge bloc of granite at the end of the hike, but the view at the top is magnificent. We could see the whole bay, our base and the coast all around it. The photos don’t do the view any justice, but here are a couple:

The sea has been extremely rough for the last couple of days, to the point where we are not able to take the boats out. Dives got canceled yesterday and we are having a dry day today. It is raining a lot as well, but I guess I can say we are used to it by now. We are all hoping the sea will calm down and we will be able to dive again in the next few days. The staff is working really hard to keep us occupied and is organizing hikes around the island, but with the pouring rain we are not sure it will happen.

This week we are celebrating Thanksgiving, and all the Americans (and me, as I am considered an honorary American) have been working hard on re-working the recipes with the ingredients available in the country (no pumpkin and the turkeys are too tiny and extremely expensive). Some other people are working on creating Christmas stockings for the kids at the orphanage, so we are still being pretty busy even though dives are not happening.
